Issue 3.2 is our Craft Issue, a continuation of our ongoing research and reportage on Portuguese colonialism. We begin with a study of calico—a textile so coveted that its import was once banned in Europe.

You’ll meet the Siddi community, whose origins trace back to Africa and who were brought to India as slaves. Their craft, kawandi, is a form of patchwork passed down through generations.
